Statement from former Arka Sokaklar director regarding RTÜK penalty: 'Classic old-school minds...'
Orhan Oğuz, who left the Arka Sokaklar team after 18 years as director due to a format change, made a statement following the penalty issued by RTÜK.
Following the statement by AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who said, "Series that should be informative to society are, on the contrary, playing a bad role by encouraging, legitimizing, and instrumentalizing violence. We all, especially producers, screenwriters, media outlets, and RTÜK, have a responsibility to prevent this," the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has rained down penalties on channels and programs.
RTÜK imposed a two-episode suspension and a maximum-level fine on Kanal D, which airs the series Arka Sokaklar, on the grounds that it covered the topic of religious sects.
While professional organizations also criticized the censorship decision, the series' former director of 18 years, Orhan Oğuz, drew attention with his statement.
Orhan Oğuz, who left the team at the end of last season due to a management decision, stated that the RTÜK penalty was caused by the format change and wrote the following:
“Changing the format of a series that has been created over 18 years is dangerous. What I did was to present a genuine adventure to the audience by making even bad acting look like good acting. I directed dozens of stories about sects and current events, and there were no problems. They will face the penalty of this format change, which was created with these hidden images by ego-driven, classic old-school minds who have ruined the series. I don't think Türker İnanoğlu is resting easy in his grave…”
