Statement from Volkan Konak following Diyanet's criminal complaint: Everyone will know their place
A statement has been released by artist Volkan Konak after the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) filed a criminal complaint against him over remarks he made regarding the institution and its head, Ali Erbaş.
Artist Volkan Konak had reacted harshly to the Diyanet and the President of Religious Affairs Ali Erbaş in a post he shared on his social media account on New Year's Eve.
Referring to Erbaş, Konak said, "The person occupying the seat of the Diyanet founded by Atatürk; it only suits people like you, who live in a merchant's reign, to perform a religion that is offered to humanity for free in exchange for a salary, and to stomach receiving a salary from the taxes of those working in the entertainment and tourism sectors. I am having a drink tonight for you as well, to contribute to your salaries and allowances. Please accept it..." he stated.

DİYANET TAKES ACTION, FILES CRIMINAL COMPLAINT
Following this widely discussed post by Konak, the Presidency of Religious Affairs took action and filed a criminal complaint against Konak with the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
In the statement made by the Diyanet, it was alleged that Konak, "carrying out duties related to the beliefs, worship, and moral principles of the Islamic religion, enlightening society on religious matters, and managing places of worship" which is entrusted to the Presidency of Religious Affairs by law, and its highest representative Ali Erbaşwere offended and their personal rights were violated.
ACCUSATION FROM DİYANET AGAINST VOLKAN KONAK
In the statement, which claimed that Konak's words constituted the crimes of 'insult' and 'inciting the public to hatred and hostility or degrading them,' it was stated: "For this reason, we request and demand that the necessary criminal proceedings be initiated against Volkan Konak, who incites the public to hatred and hostility, belittles and degrades them, leads to hatred and discrimination, fuels social polarization, attacks the sacred values of the nation, offends the religious feelings of believers, and openly insults and degrades religious values, and that a public lawsuit be filed, with our Presidency being informed of the outcome." the statement read.

Following the Diyanet's criminal complaint, Volkan Konak made a statement. Konak said, "Everyone will know their place. My country is too big and valuable to fit into anyone's wallet or the trunk of an official car. Greetings to honest, honorable, brave, and civilized people." he said.
