The secret of giant whales' songs has been solved!

Scientists have conducted studies to understand how humpback whales and other large ocean whales produce song-like sounds. According to a study published in the journal Nature, the larynxes of three stranded whales were examined to understand the sound production mechanisms of these whales.

The study determined that the larynxes of the examined whales contain a structure with a U-shaped fat pad that prevents water from being swallowed by recirculating air. It was found that this structure allows the whales to produce complex songs.

The research also emphasized that human-made noise in the ocean could negatively affect the whales' ability to communicate over long distances. It was stated that these findings could be of critical importance for the conservation of humpback whales, blue whales, and other endangered marine animals.

Professor Coen Elemans from the University of Southern Denmark stated in an interview with the BBC, "Sound is vital for whales because it is the only way they can find each other in the ocean for mating purposes."

Elemans also noted that their research reveals that human-made sounds prevent whales from communicating over long distances and added, "Whales cannot sing louder to drown out the noise humans create in the ocean."
