Turkey is now classified as a 'country with a very elderly population'

According to United Nations Population Fund data, as the world's population exceeds 8 billion and ages rapidly, Europe remains the continent with the highest proportion of elderly population at 19 percent.

As of the end of 2023, Turkey's population has surpassed 85 million and continues to age in parallel with the rest of the world.

DOUBLE DIGITS FOR THE FIRST TIME

As of the end of last year, the population aged 65 and over in Turkey reached 8 million 722 thousand 806, bringing the proportion of the elderly population within the total population to 10.2 percent, marking the first time it has reached double digits in the history of the Republic.

With the ratio of the elderly population to the total population exceeding 10 percent, Turkey has begun to be classified as a 'country with a very elderly population' according to UN criteria.

In Turkey, where the population growth rate is declining and the population is aging rapidly, population projections suggest that the ratio of the elderly population to the total population will be 12.9 percent in 2030, 16.3 percent in 2040, and 22.6 percent in 2060.
