Guinness World Records accepts: Tallest matchstick tower

Richard Plaud, who works in the arts and bridges department of the Charent-Maritime council in France, began building a 7-meter Eiffel Tower model in 2015, spending 8 years and 4,200 hours using 700,000 matchsticks.

The final piece of wood was carefully glued into place on December 27, the 100th anniversary of the death of engineer Gustave Eiffel.

The tower was set to overshadow the record for the tallest matchstick sculpture to date, held by Lebanese craftsman Toufic Daher, who created a 6.53-meter model of the Eiffel Tower in 2009, but his dreams were dashed.

The World Record attempt was rejected by Guinness because he used matchsticks from a brand that could not be purchased.

RESTORED TO ORIGINAL STATE

The organization stated that the 706,900 matchsticks used by Plaud were not commercially available and had been altered significantly from their original form. Therefore, they announced that the record attempt could not be accepted.
