War declared on social media giants in Scotland: Videos filmed in schools to be deleted!

In Scotland, it has been reported that school headteachers are pressuring social media giants to delete videos that are alleged to have negative impacts on students.

Social media platforms frequently face backlash, particularly regarding their negative effects on children. In recent days, school headteachers in Scotland have launched a campaign against these platforms.

Due to growing concerns over the negative impact of mobile phones in classrooms, headteachers are pressuring social media giants to remove inappropriate footage of students and teachers filmed in schools.

There are many social media accounts set up to publish videos of school fights, along with footage filmed both inside and outside of school. Photos and videos of students and teachers are constantly circulating online without their consent. As a result, it is stated that some children are experiencing lasting trauma.

Headteachers have stated that they are now taking action against these images and are demanding the removal of inappropriate posts and disturbing content related to students and staff filmed in schools.

Debbie Noble from Children 1st, an organization that provides support to children, said that the young people and families they support have shared experiences of bullying that were filmed at school and shared online.

The UK Safer Internet Centre stated that such online content targeting students and professionals is widespread.

Scotland says it has contacted social media sites 56 times since the beginning of the 2021-22 academic year to request the removal of images of students and staff filmed in schools.

Social media firms stated that they review accounts reported to them as concerning and remove those that violate their rules. They also stated that they have clear policies against bullying and harassment and remove content they deem to be in violation of these policies.

The Scottish Government announced that they will provide updated guidance on the appropriate use of mobile phone technology in schools and will continue to work toward finding a solution to this problem.
