What is diabetes? What are its symptoms and treatment methods?

WHAT IS DIABETES?

Diabetes Mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a condition where the glucose (sugar) level in the blood rises above normal, resulting in the presence of sugar in the urine. Diabetes, which has different types, is among the most common diseases in our country and the world. According to data from the International Diabetes Federation, one in every 11 adults has diabetes, and one person dies every 6 seconds due to diabetes-related complications.

What are the symptoms?

Diabetes manifests itself in individuals with three main symptoms. These can be listed as eating more than normal and a feeling of not being full, frequent urination, a feeling of dryness and sweetness in the mouth, and a resulting excessive thirst. Apart from these, other diabetes symptoms that may be seen in individuals can be listed as follows:

Feeling of weakness and fatigue

Rapid and involuntary weight loss

Blurred vision

A feeling of discomfort in the form of numbness and tingling in the feet

Wounds healing slower than normal

Dryness and itching of the skin

Formation of an acetone-like odor in the mouth

What are the treatment methods for diabetes?

Diabetes treatment methods vary depending on the type of the disease. In Type 1 diabetes, medical nutrition therapy must be applied meticulously along with insulin therapy. The patient's diet is planned by a dietitian according to the insulin dose and schedule recommended by the doctor. With the carbohydrate counting practice, where the insulin dose can be adjusted according to the amount of carbohydrates in food, the lives of individuals with Type 1 diabetes can be made much easier. In individuals with Type 2 diabetes, treatment usually involves the use of oral antidiabetic drugs aimed at increasing the sensitivity of cells to the insulin hormone or directly increasing the release of the insulin hormone, in addition to ensuring a proper diet.

In cases where the points to be considered in diabetes and the recommended treatment principles are not followed, blood sugar remaining at high levels leads to many health problems, primarily neuropathy (nerve damage), nephropathy (kidney damage), and retinopathy (damage to the retina of the eye). Therefore, if you are an individual with diabetes, do not neglect to have your regular check-ups.
