WHO IS GÜLNUR AYBET?

Prof. Dr. Gülnur Aybet began her role as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Turkey to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on December 15, 2021.

Aybet, who served as a Chief Advisor to the President of the Republic of Turkey between 2016 and 2021 and was a member of the Presidential Security and Foreign Policy Council from 2018 to 2021, has been a visiting lecturer at the National Defense University since 2019.

Having served as a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Istanbul Yıldız Technical University between 2017 and 2018, Aybet held the position of Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Bahçeşehir University from 2014 to 2016. In 2013, she established the International Relations department at Özyeğin University in Istanbul.

Between 2001 and 2013, Aybet was a faculty member in the Department of International Relations and Political Science at the University of Kent in the UK, where she established and directed the first master's program in International Security. She has also served as a faculty member at the University of Nottingham and Bilkent University.

Prof. Dr. Aybet completed her undergraduate studies in Economics and Public Administration at Royal Holloway, University of London in the UK, earned her first master's degree (MSc, International Relations) at the University of Southampton, her second master's degree (MPhil, War Studies) at King's College London, and received her doctorate (International Relations) from the University of Nottingham.

Having managed numerous research projects for NATO, the British Academy, and TÜBİTAK, Aybet has served as a visiting research fellow at prestigious international academic institutions such as St Antony’s College at the University of Oxford, Johns Hopkins University, and the Woodrow Wilson Center. She has also been a visiting lecturer at the NATO Defense College, the Turkish War Academies, Sabancı University, and Bilgi University.

Although Gülnur Aybet's private life has generally not been in the public eye, an anecdote from a Presidential Security and Foreign Policy Council meeting once drew attention.
