2-day-old baby dies at hospital after transfer

The incident occurred on Thursday, July 4. According to allegations, Orhan Solmaz took his wife to Kestel State Hospital for delivery after she began experiencing labor pains in the morning, having notified their doctor.

The mother, who was taken for a cesarean section around noon, left the operating room in good health along with the Solmaz baby, their 4th child.

Again according to the allegations, the family was told by doctors during the baby girl's check-ups that she had no health problems. The Solmaz baby, who was taken to her mother in a regular room, woke up the next morning when doctors came to the room.

Doctors told the family that the Solmaz baby had jaundice and needed to be transferred to Dörtçelik Children's Hospital. Upon this, the Solmaz baby was placed in an incubator and transferred to Dörtçelik Children's Hospital by a neonatal ambulance.

SHE COULD ONLY LIVE FOR 2 DAYS

The Solmaz baby, who was taken to Dörtçelik Children's Hospital, was put under phototherapy for jaundice. The doctor told the father, Orhan Solmaz, "The baby is perfectly healthy, we are applying light therapy. Bring diapers and a few clothes for tomorrow," and sent the family home. The mother, who had undergone surgery, was also discharged from Kestel State Hospital after her recovery.

On Saturday morning around 06:50, doctors called father Orhan Solmaz, saying, 'You need to come to the hospital urgently,' and hung up the phone.

Father Orhan Solmaz and his relatives, who rushed to the hospital, were devastated when the doctor delivered the tragic news. In the explanation given to the family by the doctors, it was stated that the Solmaz baby's heart had slowed down and she had passed away.

PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE CONDUCTED AN EXAMINATION

Following the suspicious death of the baby girl, who lived for only 2 days, the Prosecutor's Office conducted an examination. After the examination, the lifeless body of the Solmaz baby was taken to the Council of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy. The tiny body of the Solmaz baby, which underwent an autopsy there, was handed over to her family.

LAID TO REST IN TEARS

The lifeless body of the Solmaz baby was laid to rest in tears at Erdoğanköy City Cemetery after the funeral prayer. The Solmaz family placed the beanie and pacifier they had put on their baby immediately after birth at the head of her grave.

Stating that the doctors had informed them that the baby was perfectly healthy, father Orhan Solmaz said, "My baby was born on the 4th around 11:00, she was a perfectly healthy baby. We had the birth at Kestel State Hospital. On the 5th, the pediatrician came and said that according to the heel prick test result, the baby had the onset of jaundice and stated that the equipment was not available in Kestel. They decided to transfer our child to Dörtçelik Children's Hospital. The transfer to the Children's Hospital took place on the morning of that day.

I went to Dörtçelik. I talked to the doctor there. He told me that the baby was perfectly healthy. He noted that they would only start treatment for jaundice. They asked me to bring diapers, wet wipes, and other supplies. I said I would deliver them tomorrow. They said 'Okay.' Before 24 hours had passed, they called me at 06:52 and said I needed to be at the hospital urgently.

When I went to the hospital, they stated that my baby had died. They don't know the cause of death either. They say, 'When we arrived, the baby's heart had stopped.' They didn't give any other reason. I handed her over in perfect health. In fact, I spoke to the pediatrician in Kestel again yesterday, and when I asked if my baby had a serious problem, he said, 'No, there is definitely no serious problem. The baby was born perfectly healthy.'"

Orhan Solmaz continued his words as follows: "I asked the doctors at Bursa Dörtçelik Children's Hospital, 'We handed the baby over to you in perfect health, what happened to our baby?' They couldn't give any answer. They don't know why the baby died. The baby didn't have any illness either. We were constantly under doctor supervision during the birth process. Everything was very positive, there were no problems.

We held the baby in our arms, we breathed in her scent. She stayed with her mother for one day. Since it was a cesarean birth, it was said that she should not leave the hospital for 3 days. We transferred her to Dörtçelik Children's Hospital, but we were met with the news of her death. We want to know why our baby passed away. I am waiting for an answer from the authorities on this matter.

I definitely think there was negligence. When we went to the intensive care unit, our baby's face was completely dark purple. I don't want to judge anyone, but I want this incident to be investigated. I have experienced the pain of losing a child, and I definitely don't want anyone else to experience it. I am waiting for the autopsy result from the prosecutor's office," he said.

"MY BABY WAS PERFECTLY HEALTHY"

Stating that he lost the baby before he could put on the clothes they had bought, the father said, "I have 2 sons and 1 daughter. None of them have any health problems. When we came to the cemetery, I had difficulty lifting my son. We had prepared ourselves so much, we didn't even get the chance to put on her clothes. It was said that the mother's surgery site was damaged after she received the first news. She is currently resting at home, and I don't want to leave her alone. Her sister, her brother, we are all very sad. We are devastated as a family. We couldn't put on any of the clothes we bought for the baby. I hope they will be of use to someone else. We had bought them with love," he said.

Stating that the baby died after being transferred to Dörtçelik Children's Hospital, Solmaz said, "I was very, very satisfied with Kestel State Hospital. My previous births were in private hospitals, but my wife was coming home in great pain when she was in a private hospital. The last birth went successfully, the children were happy to see their mother. Our baby was born in perfect health. But whatever happened, it happened at Dörtçelik Children's Hospital. The doctor I spoke to said our baby was perfectly healthy and only had the onset of jaundice, and had no other problems. When I spoke to the doctor at Dörtçelik Children's Hospital, he said the baby had arrived in perfect health. They said she had no problems and that jaundice treatment had been started," he said.

Stating that the baby lived for 2 days, father Orhan Solmaz said, "They said the treatment process takes 7-10 days. We held her in our arms on July 4. On July 5, she was transferred to Dörtçelik Children's Hospital by ambulance for jaundice. On July 6, at around 06:52, they called us saying 'we need to talk urgently.' My baby was perfectly healthy, she had no problems, her blood values were also very good," he said.

The Public Prosecutor's Office also launched an investigation into the incident and performed an autopsy. The exact cause of the baby's death will become clear after the autopsy report, which will be released within 3 months. Health Directorate officials also reminded that the incident is at the prosecutor's office stage and that the exact cause of death will be clarified by the autopsy, but that the family had a consanguineous marriage.
