48-year-old man attempts suicide by drinking cyanide
In Esenyurt, a 48-year-old man, who was allegedly heavily in debt, attempted suicide by mixing cyanide into water and drinking it at his workshop. In an incident where AFAD and police teams took extensive security measures against the risk, the man who attempted suicide was taken to the hospital.
The incident occurred on Fevzi Çakmak Street in Esenyurt. It is alleged that E.K. (48), who reportedly manufactured socks at a workshop on the street, was defrauded last year and subsequently fell into significant debt.
The 48-year-old man, who was said to have been experiencing psychological problems after his workshop machinery was seized due to his debts, attempted suicide by mixing cyanide into the water he drank.
After falling ill some time after drinking the cyanide-laced water, E.K. called his friends and then went out onto the street to ask for help from those nearby. Upon notification, health, AFAD, and police teams were dispatched to the scene.
While police and AFAD teams took extensive security measures in the area, health teams transported E.K. to the hospital following initial intervention. The man, whose stomach was pumped at the hospital, is still undergoing treatment.
"HIS MACHINERY WAS SEIZED DUE TO HIS DEBTS"
A local shopkeeper named Cengiz Kula said, "His former partner called me. They had called an ambulance and said, 'Go check on him, see what's wrong.' I called my friend who owns a phone shop. He went and checked. He said, 'I'm dying, save me.' The police and ambulance arrived. He was taken to the hospital. We learned that his stomach was pumped. As far as I know, he had debts. His machinery was seized due to his debts. After that, his mental state deteriorated," he said.
"HE SAID HE DRANK CYANIDE"
Speaking about those moments, Haluk Aydın said, "A friend called in the morning. He asked, 'How is the sock manufacturer, can you check on him?' I went and checked, he was fine. Later, he came out to the street and fell to the ground. He said, 'Call an ambulance.' I asked, 'What's wrong?' He said, 'I'm vomiting, my head hurts.' The health teams arrived. When they asked what he had drunk, he said he drank 'cyanide.' He said he was defrauded last year and had a lot of debt," he said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
