Adhan recited three minutes early causes confusion
In the Burhaniye district of Balıkesir, the evening adhan (call to prayer) was recited 3 minutes early, causing many citizens to break their fast prematurely. While some religious officials stated that those who broke their fast early should observe a make-up fast after Ramadan Bayram, Gömeç Mufti Mehmet Ali Bal noted that the adhan was recited within the 'temkin' (precautionary) time window and stated that there is no need to repeat the fast.
The recitation of the evening adhan 3 minutes early in Burhaniye yesterday caused many citizens to break their fast prematurely, while subsequent statements only added to the confusion.
Officials at the Burhaniye Kocacami mosque recited the evening adhan 3 minutes early via the central system. The official, who began reciting the adhan around 19:00, cut it short after being warned by those nearby, while a municipal worker who heard the adhan fired the Ramadan cannon.
Meanwhile, many citizens broke their fast. When the adhan was recited again 3 minutes later, the error became apparent. The early recitation of the adhan became the talk of the town.
As many citizens called the mufti's office, religious officials explained that those who broke their fast early should observe a day of fasting after the end of Ramadan Bayram.
Making a statement on the matter, Gömeç Mufti and Acting Burhaniye Mufti Mehmet Ali Bal said, "According to the statements of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, there is a 3-minute 'temkin' (precautionary) time window for the evening adhan. Since the duration here did not exceed 3 minutes, the fasts are valid. Therefore, there is no need to make up the fast."
