Arrest over harassment allegation during rafting
Following a complaint by a woman who stated she was harassed during a rafting event organized by a tour company on the Karasu River in the Kemah district of Erzincan, two people were detained and referred to court; the tour owner was arrested.
In a statement issued yesterday regarding the matter, the Erzincan Governor's Office provided the following information:
"A statement has been deemed necessary following social media posts alleging that one of our citizens was harassed by a tour employee.
Upon learning of the issue, officials from the Erzincan Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports and the Erzincan Provincial Gendarmerie Command contacted our citizen who stated she was harassed, informing her that the matter is being followed meticulously and that they will provide the necessary updates.
Following the application made to judicial authorities by our citizen who declared she was harassed during the aforementioned rafting event, the suspects involved in the incident were detained in accordance with the instructions of the Kemah Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and the judicial process is ongoing."
The 2 individuals who were detained were referred to the Erzincan Courthouse today. Of the individuals referred to court with a request for arrest, the tour owner, M.A., was arrested, while the tour guide was released under judicial control and a travel ban.
The victim's lawyer, Zübeyir Yıldırım, stated in his remarks, "My client's pursuit of justice has begun to yield results. The arrest of the suspect is an important step. However, we will follow the process until the end. We expect this case to set a precedent not only for my client but for all women who are subjected to similar incidents."
