After rain, floods, and snow, now an avalanche in Rize
While Rize was exposed to floods and landslides due to heavy rainfall over the weekend, and snowfall in higher elevations, it experienced an avalanche this evening in September.
An avalanche that occurred following the snowfall over the weekend at the Tirovit Plateau in the Çamlıhemşin district caused great danger.
According to the information obtained, the accumulation of over 50 cm of snow on the plateau and the clearing of the weather today triggered the avalanche, causing a vehicle loaded with cattle to go off the road and remain hanging on the edge of a cliff.
While the driver and passengers in the vehicle experienced great panic, there was fortunately no loss of life in the incident. Due to the avalanche, 15 people and 6 vehicles were stranded on the plateau road.
As roads in the plateau were closed due to the impact of the avalanche, AFAD, AKUT, and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the region. It was learned that the teams are continuing rescue efforts under difficult conditions due to heavy snow and the risk of further avalanches.
