Downpour in Istanbul brings rush hour traffic to a standstill: Density reaches 89%, storm warning from AKOM!

The downpour that was effective throughout the day in Istanbul combined with rush hour traffic in the evening, negatively affecting transportation across the city. As of 16:46, traffic density across Istanbul was measured at 89 percent.

Vehicle flow slowed on main arteries; traffic came to a standstill in some locations.

Additional vehicle density occurred around RAMS Park due to the Galatasaray-Barcelona match. On the TEM Mahmutbey-İkitelli line, the closure of the right lane due to a vehicle breakdown in the direction of Masko further burdened traffic in the region. On the route from Aksaray Haseki towards Çapa, transportation was disrupted in the left lane due to a traffic accident.

WARNING FROM AKOM FOR THE NIGHT

According to assessments by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM), the cold air wave coming from the Balkans and the rainy system originating from the Central Mediterranean will increase their impact across the city.

AKOM reported that the rainfall is expected to increase in intensity starting from 23:00 at night. It is predicted that as of 09:00 on Wednesday, wind speeds could reach 50 to 80 kilometers per hour, and strong storms and downpours will be effective.

The storm and heavy rainfall are expected to continue until 13:00 on Thursday. It is estimated that 40 to 70 kilograms of precipitation per square meter could fall in Çatalca, Arnavutköy, Eyüpsultan, Sarıyer, Başakşehir, Esenyurt, and Büyükçekmece on the European Side; and in Maltepe, Kartal, Sultanbeyli, Pendik, Tuzla, and Şile on the Anatolian Side.

It was stated that the expected rainfall amount in other districts of Istanbul will be between 20 and 40 kilograms per square meter. Authorities emphasize the need to be cautious against negative consequences such as transportation disruptions, flooding, and roof damage due to heavy rain and wind.
