Downpour warning from IMM: Nuri Aslan tells Istanbul residents 'do not take to the roads unless necessary'

Following the heavy rainfall affecting Istanbul, a warning for citizens has been issued by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). IMM Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan stated that they are monitoring developments at the Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) in Eyüpsultan, and requested that citizens avoid going out and using private vehicles unless absolutely necessary.

Aslan stated that the rainfall began around 22:00 last night and continues intensely across the city. Calling on citizens to use public transport, Aslan said, "I specifically request all our citizens not to leave their homes and not to take to the roads in their private vehicles unless they have to. Our public transport vehicles are operational; please choose our public transport options."

RAINFALL CONSIDERED 'VERY INTENSE'

Stating that IMM teams are in the field, Aslan announced that 8,372 personnel and 2,346 vehicles are currently intervening in areas where problems have been reported. Aslan expressed that no major negative incidents have been encountered so far, but noted that risks could arise in stream beds and areas near them due to the heavy rainfall.

Emphasizing that rainfall amounts have reached very high levels in some regions, Aslan noted that 100 kilograms of rainfall per square meter in 24 hours is considered "very intense," while in Istanbul, some points have received 200 kilograms of rainfall per square meter in approximately 21 hours.

Aslan stated that IMM units are on duty under the coordination of AKOM and asked citizens who see risky spots to inform the municipality. Noting that fire department, road maintenance, İSKİ, the Department of Transportation, IETT, and Metro teams are working in the field and at the center, Aslan said that the process will be overcome by acting together.
