Heavy rainfall that intensified during the night in Istanbul's Pendik district caused a flash flood in the Göçbeyli neighborhood. As a result of the overflowing Göçbeyli Creek, which saw a rise in its flow rate, a car with the license plate 34 HER 50 was swept away by the water.
While M.D.E., one of the 3 people in the vehicle, managed to escape on their own, D.A. and F.D. were swept away by the current. M.D.E., who was brought to a safe area with the help of bystanders, was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Upon notification, Underwater Search and Rescue (SAK), AKUT, AFAD, fire department, and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the region. It was reported that the teams are conducting searches at three separate points for the 2 missing people and the car, which is believed to have been dragged by the current.
Due to the location of the incident being on the border between Istanbul and Kocaeli provinces, the Gebze Municipality Search and Rescue (GEAK) and Çayırova Municipality Search and Rescue (ÇAK) teams from Kocaeli also joined the efforts.
Ahmet Özyurt, the headman of the Kadıllı neighborhood in Gebze, stated that the incident occurred between the Kadıllı and Göçbeyli neighborhoods and that the search operations are continuing despite adverse weather conditions.
Özyurt stated that the condition of the rescued person is good, saying, "They said that after being dragged in the water with the car for about 100 or 150 meters, they broke the window and got out. The survivor said they managed to get out of the water by holding onto a branch. The flow rate of the creek is very high."
