Former AKP mayor sentenced to 12 years in prison

Canan Atasoy, the former AKP mayor of Kızılkaya Municipality in the Bucak district of Burdur, has been sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison in an embezzlement case.

Former AKP mayor sentenced to 12 years in prison

Following the March 31, 2019 Local Administration General Elections, the Kızılkaya town in the Bucak district of Burdur, where AKP's Canan Atasoy had served as mayor, passed to İlkay Güngör of the MHP, who won the election.

With MHP's Güngör taking office, a Court of Accounts audit was requested.

Following the investigations conducted by the Court of Accounts, an embezzlement case was filed in 2021 against former mayor Canan Atasoy and 14 other defendants.

In the final hearing of the case held at the Burdur 1st High Criminal Court, Canan Atasoy was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison and was arrested.

Among the other defendants tried in the embezzlement case, Gamze K. was sentenced to 2 years, 7 months, and 7 days; İbrahim C. to 8 years and 4 months; Lütfi O. to 7 years and 6 months; İsmail U. to 5 years, 6 months, and 20 days; Mehmet S. to 5 years, 2 months, and 15 days; Naci A. to 4 years, 4 months, and 15 days; Serdar Ö. to 2 years, 13 months, and 15 days; Süleyman G. to 3 years and 9 months; Ümit Ö. to 4 years, 4 months, and 15 days; Yüksel Ç. to 2 years, 7 months, and 7 days; M.İ. to 4 years and 15 days; and İbrahim Ö. to 4 years and 15 days in prison, while Ayşe B., Ümit D., and Mustafa G. were acquitted.
