Husband who killed his teacher wife sentenced to 23 years and 6 months in prison

The incident occurred at night in May of last year in the 19 Mayıs neighborhood of the İlkadım district. According to the information obtained, Saadet Çay (43), an English teacher at the Belediye Secondary School in the İlkadım district, and her husband Adem Çay (49), who runs a kiosk, had begun living separately as they were in the process of getting a divorce.

Adem Çay made a video call to his wife, Saadet Çay, a mother of two, showing a gun pointed at his own head, sent a message saying he would "commit suicide and kill himself," and asked to see her one last time. Saadet Çay went to the house that Adem Çay used as a storage unit to talk, taking her boyfriend and two children with her to help.

A dispute broke out between Saadet Çay and Adem Çay over who would keep the summer house located in the Atakum district. Saadet Çay's boyfriend, who was in the next room, heard the sound of the gun being loaded and unloaded, ran out of the house, and asked the night watchmen for help.

When the police and night watchmen broke down the door and entered the house, they found English teacher Saadet Çay shot to death. Adem Çay, who was in the house, was taken into custody by teams from the Samsun Police Department's Homicide Bureau.

Adem Çay, who had a criminal record of 19 offenses including intentional injury, threats, robbery, and resisting a public officer, was arrested and sent to prison. A lawsuit was filed against Adem Çay at the Samsun 2nd High Criminal Court. In the final hearing of the case held today, the detained defendant Adem Çay was sentenced to 22 years for the murder of his wife and 1 year and 6 months for the crime of possessing an unlicensed firearm, totaling 23 years and 6 months in prison, and it was decided that his detention would continue.
