Kitchen gas cylinder explodes in basement in Bağcılar: 'Sounded like a bomb'
A kitchen gas cylinder exploded in a basement apartment of a 2-story building in Bağcılar, Istanbul. Three people were injured, one of them seriously.
The incident occurred around 20:00 in the 15 Temmuz neighborhood on 1461st Street in Bağcılar. According to the information obtained, a kitchen gas cylinder exploded for an unknown reason in a home located in the basement of a 2-story building.
Three people who were in the house at the time of the explosion were injured. Upon notification, numerous health, fire, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. While police teams took security measures in the area, the fire that broke out after the explosion was extinguished by the intervention of fire crews.
The 3 foreign nationals injured in the explosion were taken to the hospital. It was learned that one of the injured is in serious condition. Residents of the neighborhood poured into the street upon hearing the sound of the explosion. Natural gas in the neighborhood was cut off as a precaution. The building where the explosion occurred has become unusable. Police and fire crews conducted an investigation at the scene. Following the investigation, the street and the area around the building were completely closed off.
"IT SOUNDED LIKE A BOMB EXPLODED"
Ergücan Malkoç, one of the neighborhood residents who stated that he woke up to the sound of the explosion while he was sleeping, said, "I was sleeping at home. Suddenly there was an explosion sound. I first ran to the kitchen, wondering if the sound came from our house. It sounded like a bomb exploding. When I looked out the window and saw the crowd here, I ran over. Two or three people were outside, burned. Then the fire department, police, and ambulance arrived. They took the injured and carried them away."
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
