Mayoral term ends after prison sentence finalized: New mayor of the district has been determined
In the Derecik district of Hakkari, Mesut Tekin has been elected mayor by the municipal council following the removal of Mayor Hasan Dinç from office due to his finalized prison sentence for the crime of "child sexual abuse."
The New Welfare Party (YRP) announced that as a result of the vote held in the Hakkari Derecik Municipal Council, party council member Mesut Tekin has been elected as the Mayor of Derecik.

The statement released on the party's official social media account included the following remarks:
'As a result of the election held today in the Hakkari Derecik Municipal Council, a new mayor has been determined for the mayoral office. Following the election conducted by secret ballot in the Municipal Council, our New Welfare Party Council Member Mesut Tekin, who was nominated by our Headquarters Local Administrations Presidency, has been elected as the Mayor of Hakkari Derecik. We wish our new Mayor success in his duties and hope that this will be beneficial for our Derecik.'
WHAT HAPPENED?
The prison sentence handed down to Derecik Mayor Hasan Dinç—who had resigned from the AKP to join the New Welfare Party (YRP) and subsequently resigned from there as well—for the crime of "child sexual abuse by molestation" has been finalized following the completion of the appellate and supreme court processes.

With the decision becoming final on January 26, 2026, the "provision for deprivation of public rights" was applied to Hasan Dinç, thereby ending his tenure as mayor.
