Mufti says 'we are in a pitiful state' following death of young man

Two groups clashed yesterday evening in a fight allegedly sparked by a dispute over a girl. Knives were drawn in the altercation, which involved Mehmet Ali Dertli (18), A.Y. (18), A.C.D. (17), E.Ü. (18), E.D. (18), as well as two girls named A.T. (16) and N.Ş. (16). 

During the knife fight involving a total of 7 young people, including 2 girls, Mehmet Ali Dertli, A.Y., A.C.D., and E.Ü. were injured. The injured were taken to the hospital after receiving initial intervention from medical teams.

Mehmet Ali Dertli, 18, who was seriously injured in the fight, could not be saved despite all interventions and lost his life.

It was reported that 2 of the injured are receiving treatment in intensive care, and 4 suspects have been taken into custody.

"WE ARE IN A PITIFUL STATE"

Hendek Mufti Murtaza Gür led the funeral prayer for Mehmet Ali Dertli at the New Mosque (Yeni Cami).

Expressing his feelings before the funeral prayer, Gür said, "We are in a pitiful state, we are in a state worth weeping over. A young man is leaving behind a world for us where children of this age can be killed in society.

This is a society created by me, by us, by you, by all of us. If a child of this age is being killed in a society, as its mufti, I, we, all of us, everyone living in this Hendek is responsible for this.

May God grant us the ability to take responsibility and produce solutions. May He bestow upon us wisdom and reason," he said.

The 18-year-old's body was laid to rest following the funeral prayer.
