New details have emerged in the investigation into the disappearance of Emine Özkaya, who went missing in Istanbul in December 2018. Two suspects apprehended as part of the investigation have been arrested by the court. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the primary suspect in the case, Amjed Mohsin Muhammed M., was arrested in 2021 for murdering another girlfriend with an axe and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Teams from the Istanbul Police Department's Public Security Branch, Missing Persons Bureau, have uncovered new details during intelligence work and investigations into the fate of Emine Özkaya, who went missing at Istanbul Atatürk Airport in December 2018 and from whom no word had been heard. Technical and field studies revealed that Özkaya entered Turkey from Poland via Istanbul Atatürk Airport on December 2, 2018, at approximately 09:40, went to the 15 July Democracy Bus Terminal, and from there contacted her boyfriend, Iraqi national Amjed Mohsin Muhammed M., before traveling to Eskişehir by bus.
In ongoing efforts, it was determined that Emine Özkaya reached the Eskişehir bus terminal at approximately 18:30 on the same day and met with Amjed Mohsin Muhammed, and that on December 3, 2018, at approximately 03:00, messages were sent from Özkaya's mobile phone to her family and friends, after which she could no longer be reached.
It was determined that the suspect, Amjed Mohsin Muhammed M., left the house alone that night, traveled to Şanlıurfa, returned a few days later, and moved out of the house a week later.
Following up on tips and field work, the teams conducted a detailed search of Amjed Mohsin Muhammed M.'s home in Eskişehir. During the examination, they detected traces under the parquet flooring in the living room. Following the analysis of the traces found at the scene, DNA samples belonging to 1 woman and 4 men were sent to the Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine for examination.
Deepening the investigation, teams conducted simultaneous operations in Gaziantep, Kocaeli, and Şanlıurfa on July 11, 2025, regarding the suspicion that Emine Özkaya, who had been missing for 7 years, was murdered by her boyfriend Amjed Mohsin Muhammed M. and that her body was disposed of. During the operation, suspects Asaad Monsin M.M. (37), D.U.B. (33), and E.A. (34) were apprehended and brought to Istanbul.
The 3 suspects, whose interrogations were completed at the Istanbul Police Department's Public Security Branch, were referred to the courthouse on July 14. While suspects D.U.B. and E.A. were released under judicial control conditions, Asaad Monsin M.M., who has a criminal record for intentional homicide in Kocaeli, and the primary suspect in the case, Amjed Mohsin Muhammed M., were arrested on charges of intentional homicide with planning and premeditation.
On the other hand, it was revealed that the primary suspect in the case, Amjed Mohsin Muhammed M., had been arrested in 2021 for murdering another girlfriend in Eskişehir, dismembering her with an axe, and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
