Number of people poisoned by doner reaches 648, 2 arrested

Some individuals who purchased chicken doner from a business on Atatürk Street in the Körfez district began experiencing symptoms of nausea and vomiting. A total of 648 people suffering from signs of food poisoning were admitted for treatment at Körfez State Hospital, Derince Training and Research Hospital, and Dilovası State Hospital.

While most patients were discharged following medical intervention, it was learned that 2 people remain in serious condition.

"DETERMINED TO BE NON-COMPLIANT"

In a statement released by the Kocaeli Governor's Office, it was noted that teams from the Körfez District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry took action following a notification from the District Health Directorate, stating: "They immediately went to the business in question, took samples of the chicken doner that was waiting on the doner stand ready for sale, and sent them to the Kocaeli Food Control Laboratory Directorate.

Checks conducted by officials at the Kocaeli Food Control Laboratory Directorate revealed that the test results for the chicken doner sample were negative and that the sample did not comply with the Turkish Food Codex Microbiological Criteria Regulation.

Due to the analysis results being non-compliant with the Turkish Food Codex Microbiological Criteria Regulation, a criminal complaint was filed against the business by the Körfez District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. Regarding the poisoning incident, two suspects who are the owners of the business were arrested by the duty court.

A total of 648 people across Kocaeli have sought treatment at our hospitals with suspected food poisoning. Of our 648 patients, none of whom are in life-threatening condition, 646 have been discharged following treatment, and 2 patients are still receiving treatment.

The business in question has been sealed by the Körfez Municipality, and the matter is being closely monitored by our Governor's Office, the municipality, our Provincial Health Directorate, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, and the Provincial Security Directorate." the statement read.

Two individuals identified as E.T. and K.Y., who were learned to be the operators of the doner shop, were arrested in connection with the incident.
