The Kocaeli Branch of the TMMOB Chamber of Food Engineers emphasized the critical role food engineers play in public health in a press release issued for September 25, Food Engineers Day. The statement noted that food safety problems are increasing, the production of counterfeit food is becoming widespread, and inspections remain insufficient.
Chamber officials stated that the employment of food engineers in the public sector must be increased and that there is a need for at least 1,000 new food engineers. Furthermore, it was expressed that food poisoning incidents in school cafeterias and the lack of inspections in small businesses threaten public health.
Stating that their colleagues are forced to work under precarious conditions due to the economic crisis and low wages, the Chamber announced that they are fighting against a lawsuit filed by the Denmark-based company ISS to cancel the "Base Wage Application."
Finally, it was emphasized that effective inspections must be carried out so that the public can access cheap and safe food, and that food engineers must receive the wages and social rights they deserve.
