Schools closed for one day in Hakkari and its districts
Severe rain and storms that began to affect Hakkari and its districts in the evening hours have caused significant damage, leading to a one-day closure of schools.
Due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions in the Hakkari city center, the Hakkari Governor's Office has issued a statement regarding the situation. The statement noted, "According to meteorological data, the heavy rain and thunderstorms expected across the province in the Hakkari city center and the districts of Şemdinli, Çukurca, Derecik, and Yüksekova will be strong in some areas.
It is anticipated that sleet and snow will be seen in higher elevations; the severe wind, which began during the night and has caused roofs to be blown off, is expected to increase in intensity starting from tomorrow afternoon.
In this regard, an 'orange' alert has been issued for the province of Hakkari by the General Directorate of Meteorology. Considering the risks of potential flash floods, inundation, lightning strikes, hail, transportation disruptions, roof damage, poisoning from stoves and natural gas, avalanches, and mudslides, the following measures have been taken: Education has been suspended for one day on Thursday, April 10, 2025, in all educational institutions in the Hakkari city center and the districts of Şemdinli, Çukurca, Derecik, and Yüksekova," the statement said.
The statement continued, "Among those working in public institutions and organizations; pregnant employees, individuals with disabilities, dialysis patients, public officials with chronic illnesses such as heart and kidney failure or cancer, and mothers who have children in preschool education institutions and rehabilitation centers that have been closed, will be considered on administrative leave for one day on Thursday, April 10, 2025. Administrative leave arrangements for health institutions and personnel in institutions such as the Gendarmerie, Police, and AFAD who have emergency duty responsibilities in the field will be planned by the relevant agency heads in a way that does not disrupt public services," it said.
In the statement, which also included warnings for citizens, it was stated, "It is kindly requested that our citizens be cautious against potential negative consequences caused by rain and wind on Thursday, April 10, 2025, and that they show sensitivity by avoiding open areas near buildings unless necessary, especially due to the risk of roofs being blown off."
