Statement from İzmir Metropolitan Municipality regarding the foul odor and fish deaths in the Gulf

In the statement made by the municipality, it was noted that seawater temperatures have reached 29 degrees due to the effects of global warming and climate change, and that this environment has brought about sudden increases in the population of single-celled organisms (plankton) of the "Dinoflagellate Gymnodinium" species.

The statement, which noted that the plankton deaths that began with the drop in oxygen levels in the water are the cause of the foul odor, included the following expressions:

"Furthermore, the excessive increase in the population of these organisms also causes the surface of the water they inhabit to take on a reddish-brown appearance. Along with this, it is believed that the significant decrease in the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water due to the plankton bloom is causing the fish to die.

Necessary work is being carried out by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Department of Environmental Protection and Control. Our Marine Protection Branch Directorate is also conducting cleaning operations both with sea skimmers and from the shore."
