Stepmother throws 2-year-old child from balcony

The incident occurred on September 6 in the Yeşildere neighborhood of the district.

According to the information obtained, Şerefe Çokyaşar (35), the wife of the neighborhood headman, threw her husband's 2-year-old granddaughter from the house balcony.

Upon hearing crying sounds, the mother, Zeynep Çokyaşar, picked her child up from the ground.

Suspicious of the situation, the mother examined the home's security camera footage. She then realized that the child had not fallen, but had been thrown from the balcony by Şerefe Çokyaşar.

Gendarmerie teams arriving at the scene upon notification took Şerefe Çokyaşar into custody. Çokyaşar, who was referred to judicial authorities, was arrested on September 7.

STATEMENT FROM THE ORDU GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

The Ordu Governor's Office stated the following in a press release regarding the incident: "It has become necessary to make the following statement to correctly inform the public regarding the incident that took place in the Yeşildere neighborhood of our province's Korgan district, which was reflected in the public eye via social media, concerning a 'step-grandmother causing injury to her granddaughter by pushing her from the house balcony.'

The incident reflected in the public eye via social media occurred around 16:00 on Friday, 06.09.2024. After Hanife, the child of the Muammer-Zeynep Çokyaşar couple who had come to her father's house to harvest hazelnuts with their children, was told by her step-grandmother Şerefe Çokyaşar that the child had fallen from the balcony, the victimized child was taken by her father and mother first to Korgan State Hospital and then to Fatsa State Hospital for further examination. The victim of the incident, Hanife Çokyaşar, was discharged on the same day following the intervention at Fatsa State Hospital.

Upon the Korgan Gendarmerie Command learning of the incident, the investigation conducted and the examination of security cameras revealed that the victim of the incident, Hanife Çokyaşar, was intentionally and deliberately pushed from the balcony by her step-grandmother, Şerefe Çokyaşar.

With the situation coming to light, step-grandmother Şerefe Çokyaşar was taken into custody and proceedings were initiated against her.

The day after the incident, judicial proceedings were initiated against the step-grandmother by the Korgan Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for the crime of 'attempted murder,' and step-grandmother Şerefe Çokyaşar was arrested and sent to prison."
