Tragic end for young couple returning from engagement shopping: 3 dead

The accident occurred around 18:30 at the 12th kilometer of the Burdur-Fethiye highway, near the bird observation house.

According to the information obtained, the car with license plate 32 E 2085, driven by Metehan Aydın (22) and traveling from Burdur towards Fethiye, lost control after the driver lost steering control, hit the median, flipped over, and collided head-on with a livestock-carrying pickup truck with license plate 15 AC 644, driven by Ali Ç. (40), which was coming from the opposite lane. 

Upon notification by bystanders to the 112 Emergency Call Center, health, fire, police, and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene. Health teams arriving at the scene determined that Metehan Aydın, Esra Kartal (20), and Mert Kartal (15) in the car had lost their lives.

Ali Ç. and Adem İ. (28), who were injured after being trapped in the pickup truck, were extracted by fire crews and taken to Burdur State Hospital by ambulance.

THEY HAD A PROPOSAL AND ENGAGEMENT CEREMONY

It was learned that Metehan Aydın and Esra Kartal, who lost their lives in the accident, were scheduled to have a marriage proposal and engagement ceremony in the evening in the village of İğdeli, located in the central district of Burdur.

It was learned that the young couple and the bride-to-be's brother were returning to the village after doing their engagement shopping in the center of Burdur. Relatives who came to the scene upon hearing the news of the accident while preparing for the evening's engagement and proposal ceremony suffered nervous breakdowns upon learning that the young couple and Mert Kartal had lost their lives.

Burdur Governor Türker Öksüz arrived at the scene after the accident along with Provincial Police Chief Ümit Bitirik and Deputy Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Colonel Engin Hatipoğlu to conduct investigations. In his statement, Governor Öksüz said, “We are facing a sad traffic accident. Unfortunately, we have citizens who have lost their lives. 

I would like to express with sadness that 3 of our citizens lost their lives and 2 of our citizens were injured as a result of a car coming from the direction of Burdur crossing the median into the opposite lane and colliding with a pickup truck. I wish God's mercy upon our citizens who lost their lives.

Our injured are currently at Burdur State Hospital, and I wish them a speedy recovery. It is a sad situation. The necessary interventions are being performed on our injured at the hospital. I hope that such accidents do not happen again. I offer my condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he said.
