Watermelon price multiplies by 30 over 70 kilometers

Farmers who suffered losses from the tomato paste tomatoes they planted last year reduced the planting area for this product from 150 thousand decares to 90 thousand decares, planting watermelon and corn in its place instead.

Due to the excessive planting of watermelons in particular and the fact that it coincided with the harvest in other regions, the prices at the farm gate have fallen. The price of Karacabey Plain watermelon, which started at 70 kuruş per kilogram, has dropped to as low as 30 kuruş.

Karacabey Chamber of Agriculture 2nd President Ramazan Düzen stated that the watermelon season started poorly and is continuing poorly, saying, "It started at 70 kuruş and dropped to 30 kuruş. Seedless watermelons were sold for between 3 and 5 liras. There is a lot of 'alaca' (variegated) watermelon planting this year. That is why prices have practically collapsed."

Pointing out that farmers are struggling every year because a balance cannot be achieved in production, Düzen argued that the farmer, who struggles as they try to recover their losses, is ending up in an increasingly worse situation.

The price of watermelon, which has dropped to 30 kuruş per kilogram in the Karacabey Plain, multiplies by 30 over 70 kilometers. In markets and bazaars in the center of Bursa, watermelons are being sold for between 8.90 and 11 liras per kilogram.
