The weekly Yeni Viçe Newspaper and its printing house, which have been in operation for 45 years—including the last 19 years uninterrupted in Fındıklı, Rize—have decided to cease activities. The newspaper, which is published twice a week in a 10-page tabloid format, features news and columns on issues concerning the Black Sea Region, particularly Rize, and Turkey as a whole.
The newspaper's Editor-in-Chief, Ömer Şan, spoke to 12punto. Pointing to the exorbitant price increases in printing and distribution costs, Şan stated that the advertisements they received from the Press Advertising Agency (BİK) were also cut off following the Disinformation Law. Şan noted that the 1903-model Yeni Viçe printing press is the first printing machine in Rize and has been registered as an 'Ethnographic Historical Artifact' by the Ministry of Culture. Şan stated that the newspaper, which began operations in 1978 and has published 993 issues to date, will cease publication at the start of the new year and will be sold if a buyer suitable for the newspaper's culture is found.
