BBC announces decision to close channels and cut jobs

The British public broadcaster BBC is implementing a comprehensive cost-saving plan due to increasing financial pressure. The institution announced that it will terminate some channel and radio broadcasts in line with its goal of saving 500 million pounds over the next two years, and that approximately 100 people will be laid off at BBC News.

According to the statement from the BBC, broadcasts of BBC Scotland and BBC Three channels will be terminated. BBC Radio 4 Extra is also among the channels to be closed. It is planned to move some content from these media outlets to digital platforms such as BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds, as well as to channels similar to YouTube.

In a note sent to employees, BBC Director-General Matt Brittin stated that the decisions were linked to cost pressures and the institution's need for transformation. Brittin said, "With rising cost pressures and as we rebuild the BBC for a changing world, we must ensure that every pound spent creates more value for the audience. We all know that this means difficult decisions."

Reports in the British media stated that the channel and radio closures, along with the layoffs, would provide the institution with savings of approximately 200 million pounds. It was reported that the reduction of 100 people at BBC News would contribute approximately 5.5 million pounds, while the savings target for the news unit is 51 million pounds.

In a report by the Daily Mirror, it was stated that the target of 1,800 to 2,000 layoffs announced in April means that approximately one in every 10 employees at the institution will lose their job. The report noted that 550 people working at BBC News have received notification regarding the layoff process, and that the employment contracts of 30 people at BBC Sport have been terminated.

It was reported that the channels the BBC has decided to close, along with Radio 4 Extra, will remain on air until the spring months of 2027.
