Journalist Şükran Soner has passed away: A memorable figure in the struggle for labor and human rights

Journalist, author, and Cumhuriyet Foundation Board member Şükran Soner passed away this morning at the hospital where she had been receiving treatment for some time.

Born in 1946, Soner began her journalism career in 1966 as a reporter for the newspaper Cumhuriyet. Drawing attention with the labor and education pages she prepared during the early years of her professional life, Soner became known for her reporting on the labor movement and union struggles.

In addition to journalism, Soner took on active roles in democratic mass organizations and professional associations. She held founding and managerial responsibilities in organizations such as the Human Rights Association, the Friends of the Islands Association, and the Economic and Social History Foundation.

A member of the Journalists Association of Turkey and the Journalists Union of Turkey (TGS), Soner also served in the administrative bodies of the TGS. Having served two terms as the TGS General Education Secretary in the 1970s, Soner re-entered the administration in 1999; after serving as the TGS Acting President, she was elected TGS President at the 2001 general assembly.

It has been reported that the funeral arrangements for Soner, who was one of the prominent figures of the newspaper Cumhuriyet for many years, will be shared with the public shortly.
