The increasing pressure and censorship on the press in Turkey were reflected in the 2023 Press Freedom Report. So, how many times did journalists appear in court in Turkey? Here are the details...

CHP Eskişehir Deputy Utku Çakırözer revealed the findings in the 2023 Press Freedom report.

Highlights from the report are as follows:

"Within one year, journalists were forced to appear in court 553 times to defend their news reports and social media posts.

In Turkey, 72 journalists were detained, and 27 of them were arrested due to the news they reported.

RTÜK continued to play its role as the government's stick in 2023. It issued 59 penalties, and channels were blacked out. A total of millions of liras in fines were imposed on six channels.

The censorship law was implemented in 2023, and journalists suffered the most from this law. 36 investigations were opened against 33 journalists. 6 journalists were detained, and 4 of them were arrested."
