RTÜK rains down fines on opposition media

RTÜK rains down fines on opposition media

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has released data regarding the fines it imposed on television channels throughout 2024. RTÜK issued 23 separate administrative fines on the grounds of "comments exceeding the limits of criticism and violations of impartiality." The total amount of the fines reached 55 million 100 thousand 345 Turkish Lira.

Among the channels that received the most fines from RTÜK were Tele 1, NOW TV, SZC TV, and Flash Haber. Tele 1 was issued 7 fines, NOW TV 6, SZC TV 4, and Flash Haber 2. The reasons for these fines included broadcasts containing comments contrary to impartiality and exceeding the limits of criticism.

CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT FROM ŞAHİN

RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin stated in his remarks that there is an attempt to create a "negative perception" for viewers on television. Şahin said, "In news bulletins, there is an attempt to hide the perception that there are positive developments in our country, and our citizens are being dragged into pessimism. The harshest sanctions will be applied to our broadcasting organizations in line with the authority granted by the law."
