Tele 1 broadcast to be suspended
In accordance with the decision of RTÜK, Tele 1's broadcast will be cut off within a few hours.
The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) had imposed a 5-day broadcast suspension on Tele 1 on July 24. This penalty was issued on the anniversary of the abolition of censorship. The Tele 1 screen will be blacked out for 5 days starting from Sunday night, August 31.
The Ankara 23rd Administrative Court had issued a stay of execution against this decision by RTÜK. However, this decision was overturned on August 27. Unless it is overturned by a higher court, Tele 1's broadcast will be suspended within hours.
These developments have brought discussions on media freedom and censorship back to the agenda. The blacking out of Tele 1's screens has caused widespread repercussions in public opinion.
