Bahadır Erdem reacts to Central Bank Governor's 'rental home' comment: 'This is all because of
Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan's statement that she moved in with her mother due to high rents in Istanbul has sparked controversy.
Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan stated in an interview with Hürriyet Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Hakan, "We couldn't find a house in Istanbul. It's incredibly expensive. We moved in with my parents and are staying with them."
Erkan's controversial remarks created a stir. Prof. Dr. Bahadır Erdem also reacted to Erkan. Recalling President Erdoğan's phrase regarding the economy, "interest is the cause, inflation is the result," Erdem wrote the following:
"The Central Bank Governor couldn't find a house to live in in Istanbul. Her salary wasn't enough. She was forced to move in with her mother. Could house rents in Istanbul be more expensive than in Manhattan!!! They shouldn't be. They shouldn't, but there is a reason. 'Nas' (religious decree) turned into 'Nastan' (a play on words implying 'from Nas'). The great economist has been saying 'interest is the cause, inflation is the result' for years. Yet, after the elections were won, he suddenly changed his mind. That centuries-old 'Nas' suddenly disappeared. Now, a bunch of crazy questions. Was this 'Nas' not a sin? If it wasn't a sin, is there deception again? Who deceived whom? Who was deceived? Who was fooled? Is 'Nas' a sin, but deceiving the citizens not a sin? When will Gaye Erkan fix the economy? When will rents become normal? When will she rent a house and live in it herself? As they say, two families don't fit in one house; it's a difficult situation. Will she eventually lose patience and go back to Manhattan? Or will the President send her to Manhattan so the family's peace isn't disturbed?"
