Beware of the risk of freezing in plumbing

It is necessary to be cautious against the risk of freezing that may occur in water meters and plumbing systems. Insulation is important both to prevent water meter and water pipe bursts, which frequently occur during cold winter months, and to achieve energy savings exceeding 50 percent.

Air temperatures have begun to drop to sub-zero levels in many provinces. As air temperatures fall below zero, pipe and water meter bursts caused by freezing, which occur frequently, lead to the failure of hundreds of water meters every year, while burst water pipes also cause damage and water loss. Exposed water pipes and meters freeze, pipes are damaged, and meters burst.

Pipe diameter, outdoor temperature, and insulation thickness have a direct effect on pipes and meters. As insulation thickness increases, resistance to freezing also increases, and the time it takes for stagnant water to freeze is extended.

Provides energy savings exceeding 50 percent

Insulating water plumbing also provides a solution to the rise in energy costs that burdens everyone from individual users to tradespeople and industrialists.

In buildings where plumbing insulation has been installed, the hot water in the pipes distributed from the heating boiler to the building during winter months maintains its temperature—and therefore its energy—until it reaches the apartments. Otherwise, the temperature in the pipes drops before reaching the apartment, the apartment heats up slowly, and because the water in the return pipe cools down more, the boiler must consume more fuel to reheat it. A drop in pipe temperature below a certain level also reduces the efficiency of the boiler.
