Critical earthquake warnings for Adana and Marmara from Prof. Dr. Naci Görür: 'There are high probabilities'
Seismologist Naci Görür made important statements regarding potential earthquakes in the Adana and Marmara regions.
Activity on Turkey's fault lines has increased in recent days. Seismologists are issuing warnings about active fault lines every day.
The earthquakes measuring 4.6, 4.5, and 4 that occurred in Adana yesterday were followed by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in the Mediterranean.
Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür evaluated the earthquakes in Adana during a live broadcast on Habertürk and issued new warnings regarding the fault lines.
'NO REASON TO CALL IT AN EARTHQUAKE SWARM'
Stating that "there is no reason to call it an earthquake swarm," Görür said, "However, 3 earthquakes occurred one minute apart. We believe an earthquake could occur in the Adana basin. The reason for this is the East Anatolian Fault. The East Anatolian Fault, which starts from Bingöl-Karlıova and extends to Kahramanmaraş, branches out from Kahramanmaraş towards the West, and from there towards the Adana basin."

'WE EXPECT AN EARTHQUAKE IN ADANA'
Warning that they expect an earthquake in Adana, Görür said, "The part of Eastern Anatolia that extends to Hatay is not the East Anatolian Fault; that is the Dead Sea Fault. The fault line that starts from Bingöl-Karlıova and first produced the Elazığ, then the Malatya and Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, transferred a portion of the massive energy released by these earthquakes to the Adana basin. Therefore, we expect an earthquake in the Adana basin to a certain extent."

'WARNING FOR MARMARA'
Issuing warnings regarding a potential major Marmara earthquake, Görür said, "A team led by US scientists conducted a study in 2000. They revised this study 3-4 months ago. Immediately after 1999, the probability of the Marmara region facing an earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater at any moment was calculated at 47 percent. Previously, this probability was 64 percent. This is the probability of it occurring within 30 years. Today, 25 years have already passed. In other words, this probability is close to 50 percent, like flipping a coin. This is a massive probability. I cannot understand why we are so slow when nature and science have told us everything."
