Exactly 5.6 million people... Turkey is becoming homeless
The conditions brought about by the economic crisis and practices such as selling housing to foreigners have turned Turkey into a nation of tenants.
The Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA) published a report today detailing homeownership rates across Turkey between 2006 and 2023. According to the report, at least 5.6 million people have lost their homes since 2006.
The following statements were included in the report published by the IPA:
Between 2006 and 2023, the homeownership rate across Turkey has steadily declined. Those who owned homes were forced to sell them, and for the new generation, becoming a homeowner has become nearly impossible. Partly due to the insistence on practices such as selling housing to foreigners, citizens of the Republic of Turkey have been dragged into an ongoing, deep housing and rental crisis. While a large number of homes are being concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy individuals with each passing day, at least 5.6 million people have lost the homes they owned since 2006.
