Former Tel Aviv Ambassador Namık Tan: There is a two-sided slaughter taking place, and it is being done deliberately

Namık Tan, an experienced diplomat who served as Turkey's Ambassador to Tel Aviv and Washington and is now a newly elected CHP İstanbul MP, evaluated the ongoing crisis in Gaza, stating that it is 'something' between America's 9/11 and Turkey's July 15.

Stating that Hamas achieved its goal with the October 7 attack, Tan also addressed Turkey's desire to play a role in resolving the crisis, saying, "You cannot act as a mediator when you are a party to the conflict. We have completely lost the element of trust," he said.

Tan provided the following answers to 12punto's questions:

Since the beginning of the crisis, the question on everyone's mind has been: How did Mossad miss such an attack and fail to receive prior intelligence? You know both Israel and Mossad well. Did they really not notice anything at all? Is such a thing even possible?

I cannot provide an explanation in any way. I have said this on various occasions to various people who asked for my opinion. When I consider their working methods, their meticulousness, and the vast amount of security resources they have at their disposal for this purpose, I could not even imagine how this could have happened. I could not have even imagined that such a vulnerability could exist, that it could emerge...

So, how could this have happened?

I have no concrete information, but they fell into an incredible state of indifference and complacency. You see, this conflict, which was very prominent at one time, had not been on the agenda anywhere for the last few years. Ultimately, the lethargy caused by that may have led to all of this. Even that I cannot believe. For a state with such a powerful army, in terms of weapons, ammunition, and equipment in every respect, and with tremendous internal and external intelligence, not to be aware of the preparation of thousands of rockets there, not to see the Hamas militants preparing to enter the country with paragliders, not to understand it at all, to remain in such a void, and on top of that, to have civilians cross the borders along with them into Israel. I mean, it is unimaginable. From that perspective, I agree with those who describe this as Israel's 9/11.

THIS IS SOMETHING BETWEEN 9/11 AND JULY 15 FOR ISRAEL

I have another completely speculative thought. This is something between 9/11 and July 15 for Israel. There was very serious opposition in Israel; the country as a whole was shaken by the country's shift so far to the right, and by Netanyahu's rule-breaking, populist approach that had severely undermined the state system, and there were even anti-government protests with unprecedented numbers of people participating. Therefore, Netanyahu was in a state of great political weakness there. In fact, there were reactions within some intelligence organizations, both internally and externally, from other elements of the government, and from the military intelligence wing.

The reactions were as follows: He limited, or rather, completely eliminated the constitutional oversight over the government and the Supreme Court's oversight within this framework through a government decision. Those reactions were still ongoing.

That is why this makes me think—though this is purely speculation—it does make one wonder if there might have been negligence from within. That is why I mentioned July 15.

So, can we call it "deliberate" negligence?

It is possible; I cannot believe that, in its current state, internal and external intelligence could not foresee an attack of this scale and that they could not detect it in any way seems very strange to me, and it does not even seem credible.
