Historian and author Sinan Meydan: 'RTÜK's penalty on the Kızıl Goncalar series is contrary to the fundamental principles of the Republic'

Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) member İlhan Taşcı announced the penalties imposed by RTÜK on opposition television channels in a post on his X account.

The popular series Kızıl Goncalar was issued a two-episode suspension.

Following this development, historian and author Sinan Meydan stated, "RTÜK's decision to penalize the Kızıl Goncalar series is contrary to the constitution and the fundamental principles of the Republic," and added the following remarks:

"On November 30, 1925, Law No. 677, the 'Law on the Closure of Dervish Convents and Tombs, the Abolition of the Office of Keeper of Tombs and the Prohibition of Certain Titles,' was enacted. With this law, sects and religious communities were closed. Today, according to Article 174 of the Constitution, the revolution laws are under constitutional protection.

One of those revolution laws is Law No. 677. Therefore, sects and religious communities are currently operating in violation of the constitution. By deeming the criticism of sects and religious communities—which are illegal according to the constitution—a 'crime' at the request of the sects and the political Islamist AKP government, RTÜK has in fact committed a crime itself.

Legal experts must take action against RTÜK, which is committing a constitutional crime."

Kızıl Goncalar tells the story of the intersecting fates of Levent (Özcan Deniz), a secular Kemalist, and Meryem (Özgü Namal), who lives within a conservative sect, while highlighting the unifying power of motherhood/fatherhood when it comes to a "child," despite differences in faith and opinion.

The series is produced by Faruk Turgut and written by Şükrü Necati Şahin. The lead roles are played by Özcan Deniz and Özgü Namal.
