Kadıoğlu reveals the solution for Istanbul's dams: Sponge City
Prof. Dr. Mikdat Kadıoğlu wrote about his proposal regarding Istanbul's dams and the potential water shortage problem.
While the rains falling in Istanbul paralyze the city, they have had no effect on the dams. Professor of Meteorology and Disaster Management Mikdat Kadıoğlu shared his suggestions for Istanbul's dams, which are hitting rock bottom, on social media.
Prof. Dr. Mikdat Kadıoğlu pointed out that the cause of the water shortage experienced in Istanbul, which is expected to occur frequently in the coming years, is the urbanization in the city. Emphasizing that water does not reach the dam reservoirs due to concrete construction, Kadıoğlu wrote the following:
"There is heavy rain in Istanbul, but there is no significant increase in the dams. Even if it rains all day in Istanbul, it doesn't accumulate even one day's worth of water! Because everywhere is concrete; neither surface runoff nor water seeping through the soil can reach the dam reservoirs. Unfortunately, the only solution is to rebuild as a Sponge City after the earthquake!"
Kadıoğlu also responded to a tweet from a follower who called him pessimistic as follows:
"Being realistic is an indispensable condition for a solution. It has been raining in Istanbul for two days, and not even one day's worth of water could reach the dams. Sometimes floods sweep around the dams, but not a drop reaches the reservoir. Istanbul is being organized to send rainwater into the sewage system and is being covered in concrete. This must be stopped first."
