Karar columnist's assessment of Akşener: A return does not seem very possible

The IYI Party's decision to enter the local elections without an alliance has sparked debates within the opposition front. Following Meral Akşener's words, "We will field candidates in 81 provinces," IYI Party Ankara Provincial Chair Faruk Köylüoğlu resigned from his post in protest of the headquarters' decision.

As the elections approach, there is curiosity about what roadmap the opposition will follow. Karar columnist Mehmet Ocaktan, in his article today regarding the IYI Party's decision to enter the local elections without an alliance, commented, "As time passed, it was seen that this stance of the IYI Party was not a 'bluff', but meant to openly show a red card to the CHP. Although it is necessary to consider a margin of caution regarding politicians' decisions, it does not seem very possible for Akşener to turn back after such a sharp stance that binds her." 

Ocaktan used the following expressions in his article:

"Undoubtedly, we cannot ignore Akşener's concerns that the alliance caused her party to lose, but to underline a more concrete reality, unless a miracle-like earthquake occurs in politics in general, it is not an easy task at all for the IYI Party, which has a ten percent vote share, to win municipalities in certain provinces and districts, including metropolitan ones.

If Akşener fields her own candidates in Istanbul and Ankara and the ruling party wins these municipalities, opposition voters may hold the IYI Party accountable for causing the opposition to lose.

Another reality that should not be forgotten is this; the IYI Party's vote share in Istanbul in the May 14 elections was around 8 percent. Naturally, with this vote share, unless a miracle happens, it does not seem mathematically possible for the IYI Party to take Istanbul."
