Kemal Okuyan: It is a deception to portray school attacks solely as a security issue
Stating that school massacres cannot be addressed solely under the heading of "security," TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan emphasized that the system, which generates poverty, injustice, and a lack of future, also fuels violence.
TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan, in a statement following the school massacre in Maraş, emphasized that addressing school attacks solely under the heading of "security" will not produce a solution.
Okuyan pointed out that in capitalist countries, violence and crime have not been eradicated despite increasing the number of police, equipping law enforcement with extraordinary powers, restricting fundamental rights and freedoms, and implementing widespread surveillance practices.
Okuyan reminded that crimes such as murder, rape, child abuse, and drug and arms trafficking remain widespread, and that the number of criminal organizations and the economic resources they control have increased. Pointing out that the main priority in the security understanding of capitalist states is the "continuation of the exploitation order," Okuyan stated that preventing the awakening of society is placed at the center of security policies.
'FACTORY STRIKES ARE SEEN AS A MORE IMPORTANT SECURITY ISSUE'
Stating that a strike at a factory is seen as a more important security issue than violence against women, Okuyan emphasized that crime gains a social foundation under conditions where poverty, injustice, and a lack of future prevail. Stating that school attacks and massacres in Turkey also have educational, economic, ideological, and cultural causes, Okuyan said that narrowing the issue to the field of security is a complete deception.
Okuyan stated that this approach means demanding "more restrictions on freedom in exchange for security" from the public.
Criticizing CHP Chairman Özgür Özel's approach regarding the deployment of specialized sergeants to schools, Okuyan said that the solution to preventing violence is not to surround every area of life with more security-oriented methods.
'CAPITALISM IS TRULY A SECURITY PROBLEM FOR HUMANITY'
Noting that there are many elements in society that fuel violence and lawlessness, Okuyan stated that on one hand, dangers against children are increasing, women are not protected despite clear threats, and armed imagery is becoming normalized; on the other hand, young people participating in protests and trade unionists seeking their rights are being targeted.
Reminding that there are no cleaning staff in schools and that hundreds of thousands of teachers have not been appointed, Okuyan criticized the discussion of armed structures in educational institutions under the guise of protecting students. He concluded his assessment with the words, "Capitalism is truly a security problem for humanity."
