Security Expert Mustafa Böğürcü: Why weren't precautions taken?
It has been reported that 1 person lost their life in an armed attack carried out by 2 masked individuals at the Santa Maria Church in Sarıyer, Istanbul, around 11:00 AM.
Security Expert Mustafa Böğürcü shared his assessment on his social media account regarding the attack on the Santa Maria Church in Sarıyer. Pointing out that Sundays are days of worship for various faith groups, Böğürcü asked, "Why weren't precautions taken?"
Böğürcü wrote the following:
An armed attack took place during Sunday mass at the Santa Maria Italian Church in Sarıyer. It is stated that the attackers were two people wearing ski masks. Initial reports indicate that 1 person attending the service was shot in the head and killed, and there are other wounded individuals.
The question is simple; while synagogues have for years been under protection measures with TOMA police vehicles and official riot police personnel as part of preventive and deterrent police activities, why were this church and others not placed under protection, especially since the start of the ISRAELI occupation?
Since it has been a Sunday routine for years for our citizens of different religious faiths and especially for communities coming to our country from Greece on day trips for faith tourism to visit these and similar places of worship, why were these precautions not taken?
If you do not conduct risk analysis and continue to treat the situation only as routine police operations, you cannot prevent these and similar attacks, nor can you stop them before they occur.
