The healing power of art is incredible! Long live our theater
Turkish theater is in a vicious cycle.... These difficulties experienced during production are reflected in ticket prices, making it a serious problem to reach the audience. But there are also promising developments.
'Theater', which accompanies every period of the world and conveys the period it accompanies to future generations in the best way possible, and which is one of the most important cornerstones of social memory, is one of our country's most precious art forms.
Theater, which creates space for the freedom of expression both with its conservatories and with many actors it has trained internally as apprentices, is trying to continue its path after suffering serious losses after the pandemic, just as it is all over the world.
The problems of private theaters, in particular, have reached very serious dimensions. So much so that the system is struggling within a kind of vicious cycle.
State theaters can continue to produce within their internal systems because their budgets and working principles are managed by the state and they can find space on their own stages. Although it may be easier to produce or stage there, the obligation to comply with certain filters can narrow the power of expression we just mentioned.
Precisely for this reason, the existence of private theaters, which display cultural richness in public due to their perspectives, ability to offer different colors and tones, and their position in the field of free production, is very important and valuable.
However, when we look at the present day, all private theaters, with or without stages, are having great difficulty producing under burdens such as finding a stage to work or perform, and even if they find one, stage rents, stage expenses, royalties, tax burdens, and social security expenses. These difficulties experienced during production are reflected in ticket prices, making it a serious problem to reach the audience. The 'vicious cycle' I just mentioned is exactly this.
A living, breathing human being is nourished by producing. It is our duty to produce. With the non-governmental organizations established with this goal, we are very eager to hold meetings with relevant institutions to solve the problems of private theaters and to make progress toward our goals.
We are very hopeful about the meetings with the “Vocational Qualifications Authority” to define the theater profession, determine its standards, and meet its basic needs with these standards. In this way, we will be able to achieve results of a quality that will satisfy both the audience and the sector.
There is also the popular culture side of the business. Let's convey that in the next article...
Dear reader, the healing power of art is incredible. Let's protect our stages and our plays. Let's watch them, and let's instill this healing power in our children. Let's protect them so that our Theater may Live!
With love
