Tuncay Mollaveisoğlu: “The fragmentation of Syria does not align with our national interests”

Journalist and author Tuncay Mollaveisoğlu, while assessing the developments in Syria, stated that the realities in the region are being distorted and a different picture is being painted through perception management.

Drawing attention to the increase in threats and economic burdens Turkey faces due to the division of Syria, the veteran journalist made the following observations regarding the consequences of Syria's fragmentation:

Mollaveisoğlu stated that if Syria's nation-state structure had been preserved, organizations like the PKK and PYD would not have been able to become a force equipped with advanced weapons. He used the expression, “If Syria had not been divided, these organizations would not have found a place within the existing nation-state structure.”

Stating that the fragmentation of Syria has caused severe economic consequences for Turkey, Mollaveisoğlu expressed that the arrival of millions of refugees in Turkey has required billions of liras in spending, and that these resources could have been allocated to education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Conveying that Turkey is trying to close its budget deficit through price hikes and tax increases, and that this is linked to the crisis in Syria, Mollaveisoğlu also noted that rents have risen and food inflation has increased due to the influx of refugees.

Emphasizing that the division of Syria has increased security problems in Turkish cities, created an environment of insecurity on the streets, and placed cities under great pressure due to intense migration, the veteran journalist at this point, stated that those who rejoice at the fragmentation of Syria are far from understanding the threats and burdens Turkey faces, and used the following expressions:

“The fragmentation of Syria does not align with our national interests in the slightest. The winners are clear. However, a fantasy is being marketed to citizens through pressure, slander, and perception games.”
