Tuzla Infantry School incidents: Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz: 'The state is being reformatted'

Allegations have surfaced regarding the incidents at the Tuzla Infantry School that began when a lieutenant did not wear an Atatürk photograph on his lapel on November 10. Subsequently, new claims regarding the Tuzla Infantry School have further fueled the controversy. It has been alleged that a photograph of another lieutenant, believed to be the leader of the group acting with the lieutenant who did not wear the Atatürk photograph, was found from last year showing him in robes and a turban at a religious sect meeting. Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz made evaluations to 12punto regarding the events at the Tuzla Infantry School.

Emphasizing that religious sects and communities have long received support from the government in line with the ideological program of politics, Yavuz stated that what is happening is not a surprise.

Stating that the goal is to end the Atatürk Republic, Yavuz said the following:

“The end of this business leads to ending the Atatürk Republic and establishing their own republic. That is the goal, the purpose. In my opinion, what needs to be questioned is the Military Academy education. I mean, these officers have only been there for 40 days and this is happening. Therefore, I do not see anything negative in the infantry school itself. Of course, we do not know the details. They may know other things.

This is not a matter that can be solved by changing the regimental commander, school commander, or company commander there. What is important is to reveal where these men get this audacity from. They are taking an anti-Atatürk stance in an audacious manner."

Yavuz also commented on the 'discovery of a publication belonging to Hezbollah at the school,' which Müyesser Yıldız wrote about in her report yesterday:

"There is nothing surprising about finding a publication belonging to Hezbollah. The AKP-led People's Alliance brought Hezbollah into parliament. In general, we are moving step by step away from a secular, legal, social, democratic state. The state is being reformatted. The Republic is being reformatted. This is not the only thing happening. For instance, the naming of a street after Sheikh Said by a trustee mayor is another dimension of the issue."

Everyone who is sensible will unite around the Atatürk program. Whoever is sincere about uniting around him should do so; there is no other way left. It has ceased to be a matter of Party A or Party B."
