Winter tire warning from TŞOF President

President Apaydın of the Turkish Drivers and Automobile Federation (TŞOF) stated that the Istanbul Governor's Office has moved the mandatory winter tire application for commercial vehicles up to November 25, adding, "Our drivers should switch to winter tires without waiting for the last day, taking into account the potential congestion at tire shops."

Apaydın issued a written statement providing warnings regarding the matter.

Pointing out that cold and rainy weather is taking effect, Apaydın remarked, "Our drivers should switch to winter tires without waiting for the last day, taking into account the potential congestion at tire shops. Failing to switch to winter tires in places where the air temperature drops to 7 degrees or below not only reduces vehicle performance but also shortens the lifespan of the tires."

PENALTIES INCREASED BY 58.46 PERCENT

Apaydın provided information that a 2,568 lira administrative fine will be imposed if commercial vehicles that do not have winter tires installed are identified this year, noting the following:

"This fine will be updated in the new year with a 58.46 percent increase based on the revaluation rate. Authorities conducting inspections for the mandatory winter tire application, which will begin on November 25, should not impose penal sanctions until December 1 so that our tradesmen drivers do not suffer grievances. These dates should be considered a transition period and should be focused on warnings and education."

"Those working intercity should not set out without tire chains"

Apaydın pointed out that in addition to winter tires, other winter maintenance for vehicles should not be neglected. Apaydın used the following expressions:

"Vehicles that do not undergo winter maintenance incur more costs than usual when they enter traffic. Therefore, measures such as engine maintenance and antifreeze checks must be taken for all vehicles. It is very important that everything from vehicle tires to brakes, steering, transmission, differential, and engine oil maintenance is done on time and completely. In addition, antifreeze should be added to radiators and windshield washer fluid. Brake pads, electronic components, and the heater-air conditioning system—in short, all mechanisms in the vehicle—should be reviewed and made ready for winter. It is of great importance, especially for those working intercity, not to set out without tire chains and tow ropes."
