Ahmet Özer to Bahçeli: We are now expecting action

Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer, who was arrested as part of the "urban consensus" investigation and released in recent months, addressed the public at Cumhuriyet Square. Responding to questions regarding Bahçeli's recent statements, Özer shared his assessment with the following words:

"I thank Mr. Bahçeli for this statement. Of course, he has spoken the truth. Of course, this file is completely empty; this is a confirmation from the mouth of the ruling party's partner itself as to what motive this was filed with. But our expectation is this.

Both Mr. Bahçeli and Mr. Feti Yıldız occasionally state truths regarding the law that we would all sign our names to.

But we are now expecting action. We are now expecting the implementation of this. Therefore, we naturally attach importance to these.

For this reason, we thank them. But we also expect them to take steps with their alliance partners to put an end to these injustices and illegalities."

WHAT HAPPENED?

Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer appeared before a judge in Silivri yesterday in the "urban consensus" case that led to his arrest and the appointment of a trustee in his place. Özer, who was being tried on charges of "being a member of an armed terrorist organization" with a requested sentence of 7.5 to 15 years in prison, was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison.

MHP leader Bahçeli had reacted on social media to the 6-year-and-3-month prison sentence given to Esenyurt Mayor Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özer. In his post, Bahçeli stated, "The sentencing of Esenyurt Mayor Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özer to 6 years and 3 months in prison for the crime of 'being a member of an armed terrorist organization' not only contradicts universal legal principles but is also diametrically opposed to the goal and effort of a 'Terror-Free Turkey.' This decision has no resonance or reasonable justification in the collective conscience."
